Document Summary

Sound- considered by many to be the very source of poetry. The following are some ways of describing sound in poetry: Assonance- repetition of vowel sounds (little itty bitty) Initial alliteration -where the repetition occurs on stressed words. Onomatopoeia- words try to imitate the actual sounds ( gong clang ) Sound symbolism: sibilants- (s, sh): soft, quiet, hushed, seductive voiced sounds (b, p, d): explosive, sudden hard consonants/blends (cr, ch, gr): harsh, angry. Rhythm: in the english language, is based on whether a syllable is stressed or unstressed. There are 4 stress patterns used to describe meter (rhythm) in english. Spondee: two stressed in a row : john smith. These patterns (feet) are arranged in lines of poetry, most frequently with 4 or 5 feet in one line, called tetrameter(4 feet or stresses) or pentameter(5 feet or stresses) Stucture- lines are the foundation of poetry (not sentences!).
