ESCI 1 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Cherry Picking
Document Summary
I believe that it is important to have skepticism of the scientist but not the science. They miscalculate sometimes, their lust for glory can overrun their need for truth, they may push for causations that do not exist. Healthy skepticism is important when one is presented with the latest look what science just found out article. Oftentimes, reports sway toward the dramatic instead of the actual, making it imperative to look at the facts behind the ah ha moment proclamation. In many cases, the science behind a proclamation can be skewed to benefit a certain population. For example, temperatures haven"t even rose that much so climate change doesn"t exist helps out those who are contributing to climate change and who would lose money if people decided to do something about their effect on climate change. However, there is a distinction between the scientist and the science. Science is facts, they are data points and specific numbers.
