PSC 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Equality Of Outcome, Ethnic Conflict
Document Summary
Society: a collection of people bound by shared institutions that define how human relationships should be conducted. To call something an institution is to say that it"s durable and that people think it"s important (e. g. - language, family, relationships) All of these institutions together define who is a member of a particular society, and what it means to be a member of this society. There can be many ethnic groups within a single state, as well within a single society. Not inherently a political form of identity - it doesn"t have any meaning in terms of how political power is distributed. Thought of as biological, but defined in different ways in different contexts (e. g. rwanda -- there was not physical or ethnic distinction between the two groups in conflict) Nationality: a shared sense of group identity, and of that identity as the only legitimate basis for government. Group identity that is inherently political - who rules whom.
