Endochondral ossiication also occurs in epiphyseal plates of long bones as they grow in length. Zone that is closest to the epiphysis is the resting cartilage. (kind of like a basement membrane) Zone of proliferating cartilage-driving the growth of the bone as we age. Zone of hypertrophic cartilage-setting up the cartilage to lay the foundation for bone. The cells are growing and stacking on top of one another. Zone of calciied cartilage-closer to the diaphysis. Gets too excited therefore they"re are dead chondrocytes and. As long as cartilage grows, bone gets taller. When the bone inally catches up to cartilage, it takes over and closes the plate for cartilage and we stop growing** Bones thicken thanks to the cooperative action of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Bone will grow from the periosteum outwards. Bone matrix is being laid down around a blood vessel.
