Basilica was one type of early christian church. Built around 330 ad under the rule of constantine. Knocked down in 15th century while the new basilica was built in the same place. Forecourt in the front: secular city to the spiritual church. Axis of symmetry from center door through the back where the altar was. 3 story elevation: arcade, gallery, clearstory, clearstory the windows in between high and low levels of roof. Walls connected by timber so that it wouldn"t be blown down by wind. Triphorium space: years later in gothic architecture, there was a gallery with windows, similar to calling a chariot a benz. No light came in at the bottom because of the low level roof. Believed that st peter was buried under. Piranesi: prints that captured the appearance of roman monuments, san paolo fuori le mura. St paul"s outside the walls : similar to st peter"s basilica appearance.
