BIO 126 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Closed System, Bronchiole, Arteriole
Document Summary
Functions of circulatory system: doesn"t just move oxygen and remove waste, moves nutrients, hormones, ions, heat (thermoregulation) o. Protection by white blood cells (antibodies: main functions: It"s a connective tissue made of plasma and formed elements: made of: Albumin (carrier proteins), fibrinogen (for clotting), immunoglobulin (for defense) o. Platelets: kind of a piece of a cell. They are cell fragments that pinch off from larger cells in bone marrow. Prothrombin is activated to thrombin which activates fibrinogen to fibrin which will basically make a plug for clotting. Types of circulatory systems: open and closed. Open system: blood is not always located in a blood vessel - it can be in contact with other things. Closed system: blood is always in vessels (2 exceptions in humans: spleen and liver: vertebrate circulatory system. Fish: single circuit (one closed circle starts with heart that pumps blood around body and then comes back to the heart)
