Document Summary

The transmission of traits from one generation to the next. Coded info in the form of hereditary units. Our genetic link to our parents that program the traits that emerge as we develope. Inherited info is passed in the form of each gene"s specific sequence of dna nucleotides. Gene programs synthesize specific enzymes and other proteins whose cummulative action produces an organism"s inherited traits. Dna of eukaryotic cells is packed into chromosomes within the nucleus. Humans have 46 chromosomes in their somatic cells (all cells of the body but the gametes) One chromosome has a few thousand genes. The genes specific location along the length of the chromosome. Genetic endowment consisting of genes and dna that make up chromosomes inherited. During fertilization, male and female gametes unite vehicles that transmit genes from one generation to the next. Single individual is the sole parent and passes copies of all its genes to the offspring without fusion of gametes.
