Document Summary

Analysis of big black good man by richard wright. Olaf jenson, the main character in big black good man by richard wright, is an embodiment of the common everyday life situation in which people form opinions about others based on their physical appearances tied with social stereotypes. The story uses limited omniscience, a narrative point of view in which the narrator has limited knowledge of just one character. In this story, jenson, has limited omniscience with respect to a guest, jim, who appears at the front desk in the motel in which jim works. Jenson is a man of travel who has seen the world, learned multiple languages and has interacted with people from diverse races and cultures. His encounters with so many different kinds of people coupled with his experiences in foreign lands, demand of him to be open-minded and non-judgmental. However, his interactions with jim give the readers" a notion that he is prejudiced and racist.
