HSCI 337 Lecture 1: L1
Document Summary
4 major organic molecules: nucleic acid = long chain of nucleotides. Nucleotide: 5 carbon sugar (deoxyribose) with phosphate group (phosphorus + electronegative oxygens) and nitrogenous base/foundation (nitrogen organic molecule) Bind phosphate to sugars to make the backbone of dna of nucleotides (with bases facing each other bound by hydrogen bond) Thymine: carbohydrates = long chains simple sugars, lipids = long chains of triglycerides, proteins = long chain of amino acids. Double stranded dna (bases bind to each other in the middle: base-pair rule: allows for stability of dna. Double ring needs bound to single ring. G binds to c only with 3 hydrogen bonds. A binds to t only with 2 hydrogen bonds. Ex: acctgg > complimentary strand = tggacc. Protein synthesis: need to go through transcription & translation to get a protein: why proteins are important: Genes code for amino acids to become proteins & proteins assemble things in your body (like melanin to make pigment in your eyes)
