Help relationships and in turn, lessen depression. Teach skills necessary to obtain more reinforcement from interactions with others. Social skills training is an integral component. Teaches depressed youngsters to identify and challenge and modify. Example of negative thought processes negative thought processes. Cbt - integration of cognitive and behavioral therapies. Most success in treating depression in young people. Focus is on skills training to promote control over mood and enhance coping abilities. Concern about side effects especially increased suicide rate. Large scale prevention efforts are directed at early detection of high school students at risk or depression and suicid. Bipolar 1 - criteria for a manic episode must be met. Person may have major depressive episode or a so called hypomanic episode along with manic episodes but not required for diagnosis.
