Sensory abnormalities are common and persistent in children with autism with 90% having problems in sensory domains. Over selective and impaired shifting of attention to sensory input. Difficulty in situations that require social understanding. Deficit in mentalization or theory of mind: difficulty understanding. Deficits in processing social emotional info others and their own mental states. Early: begin as soon as diagnosis is seriously considered. Intensive: 25 hrs a week, 12 mos a yr. Low student teacher ratio to meet individualized goals. Family inclusion with family training as needed. Ongoing assessment to monitor progress and adjust treatment for asd way to account for broader context. Strong human tendency to interpret stimuli in a relatively global. Do well on tasks requiring focus on parts of stimulus. May more often fail to see the big picture. About 400 different treatments but there is no known cure.
