How parents teach depends on teaching through demonstration, imitation and motor vs. verbal. Collaborate, lead and follow, cooperate & disagree. Mayan children taught highly directive and detail oriented basket. Teaching and learning changes with society patterns by mothers in 1970s. Mayan children taught less constrained and repetitive patterns and were able to be more creative in 1990s. Skills transmitted by mothers allowed more independence. Shift from subsistence economy to cash economy based upon tourism. School learning - piagetian theory and psychometrics take an acaedemic stance. Going to school may not impact theory of mind. Vygotsky posits all learning to be contextual and dependent on the goal directed action of socialization.
