The development of sociology: sociology as a social product influenced by social and historical conditions, emerged in europe in the 18th ad 19th centuries. Faith in ability of reason to solve human problems. Positivism accurate observation and description rather than religious dogma or poetic inspiration as basis for knowledge. Humanitarianism human reason can direct social change to improve society -> basis of social reform tradition that has been a strong part of sociology: sociology as a discipline. Society is more than the sum of its parts exists apart from the individuals who make it up: external and internal to individuals. Societal norms and expectations become a part of us and we generally comply: each part of society contributes to the maintenance of the whole basis for functionalism. Social facts = social patterns that are external to individuals values, norms, patterns (such as crime rates), suicide rates: cannot be explained by psychology or biology, constrain human behavior.
