When columns end because they aren"t all enough go up into shaft to look gothic: ancient columns of the old church and atrium inserted into the gothic piers. Florence cathedral, begun 1296 by arnolfo di cambio: early building; santa reparata. 1296, new project of arnolfo di cambio. Most sumptuous work : giotto appointed 1334, but did campanile (tower); 1357. The nave radiates towards a huge octagon.
