BIOLOGY 290 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Neonicotinoid
Document Summary
Pollinators neonicotinoids: type of systemic pesticide that is absorbed into the plant, studies have shown that they negatively impacted the population size of honeybees and wild bees. Worldwide, most crops are not very pollinator-dependent. Data shows that the crops not dependent on animal pollination (wind pollinated) have higher yields and less variability year to year. Pollinator dependency is variable across crops; grains have no dependency, veggies like peppers and tomatos have low dependency (w/o pollinators would lose 10%), apples are greatly dependent (would lose 40-90%) and chocolate is very dependent (would lose >90%) Would we still get vitamins and minerals without pollinators: many vitamins would not be very devastated, but significant portions of some would be lost.
