Sexually receptive for 9 days, so females will solicit males throughout period and not during period so males can"t tell when she is truly receptive, and can"t tell which male is the father. Altruism: helping others at expense of self. Reduces fitness of self but increases fitness of recipient. Problems with group-selection explanations: wynne-edwards suggested that altruistic behaviors have evolved because they enhance the survival of the group. Individual calling alarm less fitness, but surrounding beneficients may not have alarm-calling trait, so alarm calling not being naturally selected. How do altruistic behaviors evolve: kin selection: proposed by w. d. Acting altruistically toward relatives will pass on actor"s genes. Benefits to recipient and degree of relatedness between actor and recipient will exceed cost to actor. Inclusive fitness - fitness of overall individuals within group, weighted by degree of relatedness: hamilton"s rule - mathematical representation of kin selection.
