Darwin did not understand everything about inheritance and variability: he could not explain: How traits were passed from parents to offspring. How new variation arose: gregor mendel will eventually discover these. Blending inheritance: this was the explanation for inheritance during the 19th century, the parent"s traits are blended in offspring. Ex. red mother + white father = pink offspring: could not uphold because: Over time, there would be no more variation because all the offspring would be blended. Blue eyed mom + brown eyed dad is never = to a blended: mendel would reject blending inheritance blue and brown eyed offspring. Gregor mendel (1822 - 1884: moravian monk in now slovakia, bred garden pea plants (1856 - 1863, worked with discrete traits with two variants (forms) Tall vs short etc: established three principles of inheritance, gave rise to the modern synthesis , later scientists would recreate these experiments independently. For each trait, mendel created a true-breeding ( pure ) strain.
