Undue influence= an offer of an excessive, unwarranted, inappropriate or improper reward or other overture in order to obtain compliance. Coercion= an over threat of harm is intentionally presented by one person to another in order to obtain compliance. Federal regulations specific populations as being especially vulnerable and warranting additional protections, outlined in 45cfr46, subparts b-d. Physical control- physically forced to participate in research. Coercion- use of a credible threat of harm or force to control another person. Research involving mentally disabled persons has not been subject to additional regulations in a special subpart of the hhs regulations. A broad array of additional safeguards exist for subjects who may be vulnerable to coercion or undue influence due to an impaired capacity to provide informed consent. Historically, women of childbearing potential have been excluded from research.
