RELIGION 155 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Major Trauma, Mark Goodacre, Epistle To The Philippians
Document Summary
Rel 155: the new testament: 8 november 2016. Occasional (cid:507)or contingent(cid:508) letters: paul"s letters are written at a particular time, to a particular audience to deal with a particular problem (or set of problems). Mirror reading: the attempt to work out what paul"s dialogue partners were saying. 1 corinthians: a good example of a letter written to deal with specific pastoral problems (cid:558) factions, meat offered to idols, sex, worship. Galatians: written to deal with a major issue that had arisen in the galatian churches, echoing problems that had earlier played out in antioch: paul opposes the idea that his male gentile converts should circumcise . It is harder to pinpoint the occasion for philippians. It provides an intriguing glimpse into paul"s later life, and his attitude to imprisonment and impending death, but precise occasion less clear: the letter"s context. Paul is in prison (1. 12-14), but no one knows where. Letter implies a strong relationship between paul and the philippians.
