Rel 155: the new testament: 29 october 2013. Lecture 17: 1 corinthians: paul: evangelist, pastor, letter writer. Paul presents himself as (cid:515)an apostle to the gentiles(cid:516), preaching a gospel of (cid:515)christ crucified(cid:516) in cities across the mediterranean; achieves real success. His communities are the cause of much strife in paul(cid:514)s life. Reasons(cid:497: they do not behave, they are influenced by other charismatic leaders, they are influenced by neighbouring communities, they misunderstand paul(cid:514)s teaching. By the 50s, almost twenty years into his missionary work, paul speaks of problems with his churches as a cause of major anxiety: 11. 28: the daily pressure upon me of my anxiety for all the churches. 13. 7: now we pray to god that you do no wrong; not that we ourselves may appear approved, but that you may do what is right, even though we may appear unapproved: sending emissaries.
