They carry out specialized tasks such as energy production, protein synthesis, reproduction, and processing nutrients and waste. The nucleus is surrounded by a double-layered membrane nuclear envelope which is studded with pores that allow info from inside the nucleus to enter the cytoplasm. Mitochondria takes fuel in the form of sugar (glucose) and covert it to usable energy atp. It is the powerhouse of the eukaryotic cell. Chloroplasts capture energy from the sun and use that energy to build sugar molecules. Endoplasmic reticulum (er) is a series of sacs and tubes that assemble other cellular components. Rough er has ribosomes embedded in it, giving it the beaded appearance that led to its name. It assists ribosomes in protein production, modifying and packaging proteins after ribosomes produce them. Smooth er (w/o ribosomes) can different functions depending on the cell type, but it is often the site of the synthesis of lipids.
