Upper middle class: those with well-paid managerial and professional occupations (e. g. , lawyers, dentists) Lower working class: retail workers and those employed in service occupations (e. g. , childcare and home support services) There are gender differences as well: females earn almost 80% of the earnings of their male counterparts. Since mid-20th century, little change in distribution of total income across households. Immigrants, despite their higher education and training, also make less in comparison to others. But increase in income inequality: decline in share of total income received by the three middle quintiles. Absolute poverty: those with so little income that survival is difficult.
