Social mobility refers to movement within a stratification system. Intergenerational mobility occurs between generations: intragenerational mobility occurs within a single generation. Poverty is a state in which material and cultural resources are lacking. Relative poverty refers to the deprivation of one individual in comparison with another. Absolute poverty refers to the life-threatening deprivation of an individual. The average poverty rate decreased between 1981 and 2010: women are more likely than men to live in poverty. New immigrants are more likely to live in poverty. Singles and lone parents are more likely to live in poverty. Individuals living in poverty have inadequate housing: unsafe, in poor repair, too small, temporary, individuals living in poverty suffer health consequences, inadequate nutrition, poor healthcare, increased stress, shorter lifespan.
