Testing began in 1930s on race horses. Testing among human athletes began in 1960s. International olympic committee (ioc) began testing after cyclist died from amphetamine use. Comprehensive testing began in 1972: to ensure an even playing field (amphetamines and steroids) Collegiate sports were not systematically subjected to testing until 1986 (ncaa) Professional sports have been slow to adopt drug testing, particularly mandatory testing due to strong resistance from players unions. 2006: nhl, mlb, nba and nfl adopt testing. 14 states have decriminalized with strong support. All 50 states have made possession of a small amount a misdemeanor.
