PHIL 1110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Big Bang, Physicalism
Document Summary
What kinds of things are there: physical objects, mental objects. Dualism - i consist of a mind (essential to me) and a body (accidental to me) Descartes believed that only humans could think and that animals only respond to external factors. The parts can be named (i. e. parts of a person) No part of a person seems to be a person. (i. e. the ship of theseus, the questioning of the chariot in the reading) Buddhist didn"t believe that the ship of theseus was an actual ship. We talk about things like the exists, but they don"t exists. You never bring anything into existence (i. e. making a sandcastle from the sand granules found on beach, the sand already existed, just in a different form, rearranging your fingers to make a fist. Buddhists believe that you are just adding more parts. Nothing goes into existence because matter cannot be created, nor destroyed, therefore it goes no where.
