Document Summary

Special senses taste, smell, vision, hearing, body position and acceleration (semicircular canals, vestibules) Molecules in the air capable of being smelled. Where odorants are detected by olfactory receptor proteins. In superior regions of nasal cavity, just inferior to the cribriform plate. Ducts carry mucus secreted by these glands to surface of olfactory epithelium. Olfactory epithelium is mostly coated by a mucus layer. Odorants trapped in mucus layer are now dissolved in volume of mucus layer which increases odorant concentration. Detection of very small amount of odorants (parts per million) About 35 different olfactory receptor types with very non specific receptors and receptor activation patterns give rise to smell perception. Receptor cells are easily activate (low threshold) i. ii. iii. Divide by mitosis to replace olfactory receptor cells d. Olfactory receptor cells i. ii. iii. iv. v. vi. Lots of long olfactory cilia in the mucus layer. Patterns of receptor activation give rise to different smell perceptions.
