Some agreed upon definitions self-awareness and awareness. First extreme: that animals are not conscious, and don"t have good sensations, awareness is not present in animals. For descartes, animals are simply machines, they have quirks. Some view language as necessary for consciousness. Ex. lobsters don"t have consciousness, so even when they"re boiled alive, it"s not actual pain, it"s due to their shells.
