Unipolar disorders individual only has episodes of depression and no episodes of mania/hypomania (reason why it is called unipolar only shows symptoms of depression) Major depressive disorder (mdd) at least one major depressive episode. Patients of mdd can also be diagnosed as psychotic when delusions or hallucinations are present. Bereavement exclusion eliminated from the dsm 5. It was thought that loss of someone close to you was not considered depression unless it continued into 2 months after the incident. It was removed from the dsm now, death can trigger. Depressive episodes can come in waves an immediate onset of depression. Persistent depressive disorder (dysthymic disorder; dysthymia) chronic, mild depression. Don"t need as many symptoms and they don"t have to be as severe, but they are more long-lasting than mdd. Average age of onset of depression is usually in the early 30"s. Bipolar disorder (the person experiences both symptoms of depression and symptoms of mania; hence, bi-polar )
