COM 100 Lecture 4: COMM GLOBAL AGE CHAPTER 12
Document Summary
Media researchers have focused most of their effort on two types of research: A theory is a set of principles or ideas that explains (and sometimes predicts) . Media effects research tries to understand, explain, and predict the effects of mass media on individuals and society. Ex: research to try and uncover whether or not there is a connection between aggressive behavior and violence in the media, particularly in children and teens. Conclusion: violent scenes on tv and in movies stimulate aggressive behavior in children and teens especially young boys but not among all of them and not in every circumstance. Cultural studies research focuses on how people make meaning of their life, understand reality, and articulate values through their use of cultural symbols (including the mass media) It rejects media-effects research tradition and tries to understand how meaning is produced not only among audiences but also among media producers.
