Congregation made up church (rather than building), no embellishments. Tithing man would keep people awake: where overflow from fanuiel hall would come. Had to pay for a pew (downstairs: wealthy people) 3rd balcony: don"t own land, slave or servant or poor. Phillis wheatley: 1st black to publish, came here. 3 pence tax on tea, only 7 loyalists could sell in boston. 3 ships arrived w tea, citizens have 20 days to decide what to do. Gov said had to keep ship here, sam adams ended meetings (actually a signal to throw tea in harbor) Pass intolerable acts (closed to all shipping except british troops) Boston did a lot to start war, this building. Turn this into school, rip up pews, cover gravel, train horses. 1872 most downtown boston burned down in great fire, this building is saved. Congregation moved to gothic church in copley square. Post office for a bit, sold building bc ground beneath is worth a lot.
