Attitudes = enduring mental representations of features of the social, eternal, physical world. Attitudes can predict behavior due to the interrelated nature of the three components (cognition, effect, and behavior) Attitudes can affect behavior (strong, well-established, and accessible) Attitude accessibility the ease at which specific attitudes can be remembered and brought to consciousness (permastore) Interaction of three components may differ according to needs. Theory of reasoned action/planned behavior (azjen & fishbein 1980) = if one makes a cognitive plan of action, it will be likely that they will follow it. Fazio (1989) attitude to behavior process (perception) Genetic evidence (certain temperaments are prone to certain attitudes) Purposes: knowledge function, identity/self-expression function, self-esteem function, ego-defensive function, impression motivation function.
