All they can see in the cave are shadows so all they know about themselves is the shadow and that of others. The shadows become their reality and what they understand. Present in the physical sense but not in the human sense which makes him all object except he isn"t object because he doesn"t possess the thing that the novel presents to objectivity: scent. The object has scent which is what expresses its objectivity and he doesn"t have that because he doesn"t have a scent. Without knowledge is to be without guilt. To be human is to be sinful, to but guilty-mortality is our guilt-shame is out guilt-the recognition of the mortality is our guilt and he is not guilty of being a human.
