Not subjects but objects so they were not responsible for their own behavior much like a dog. Intense threats of violence and actual violence. Made to feel transient at all times. Could never settle into any particular places. Women were raped to produce more slaves. If they saw a romantic relationship (plantation owners) between man and women, they would rape woman in front of the man as a way of discouraging emotional attachment.
