SC213 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Action Potential, Motor Neuron, Neuroglia
Document Summary
The human nervous system is comprised of two kinds of cells: Has all the usual cell structures including nucleus, Receive and transmit information to/from other cells. Distinctive in shape and function from other cells in the body. Various types, for example ribosomes, etc, it just looks different. The human brain contains approximately 100 billion individual neurons. Behavior depends upon the communication between neurons. First to demonstrate that the individual cells comprising the nervous system remained separate. Previous scientists did see cells but they were unable to see them closely/clearly. Cajal noticed that the axons project to neighboring cells but that the cells did not touch one another. Like other cells in the body, neurons contain the following structures: Structure that performs metabolic activities and provides energy that the cells requires. Sites at which the cell synthesizes new protein molecules. Network of thin tubes that transport newly synthesized proteins to their location shape.
