Document Summary
Basically every smoker has early stages of emphysema. Destruction of alevoli, grapelike clusters of air sacs at the ehnd of the smallest ariways (bro. Excessive airway mucus secretion: a persistent productive cough. Narrowing of airways, making it hard to move air in and out. Have structural changes in airways, obstruction in airways. It"s not the nicotine: toxic chemicals in tobacco smoke cause chronic inflammation in the la. Marked increase in the size and number of mucus glands in the bronchial wall. Glands secrete a lot of mucus into the airway which must be coughed up so you don"t drow. Tobacco is used hella in different cultures around the world (esp western) More doctors smoke camels than any other brand!!!!!!! There is also an enlargement of the heart with bronchitis. Antibiotics have a definite but limited benefit in severe cases. Systemic corticosteroids are valuable during hospitalization but not after discharge. Pulmonary rehab can help quality of life after recovery.
