Document Summary

Lecture name: individuality in mayan and moche art. The moche culture was the first state level civilization in the americas. It dominated most of northern peru and its most prominent buildings were the. Huaca de sol (temple of the sun) and the huaca de luna (temple of the moon). However much of these buildings have been lost because of the spanish colonization. The spanish extracted the gold from these temples by inundating them with water and panning out the gold from the streams. The moche were known for their pottery and metalwork. They also developed one of the first forms of mass production by creating ceramic molds. A central theme in moche art is the bloodletting ceremony. The drawing shows an image of a bloodletting ceremony that was originally of a pot. The drawing has two central layers: the bottom shows the killing of captives and the top shows a king drinking blood.
