Up until the 1830s, abolition was just abolition of the slave trade. Around 1830 people began to speak out and say slavery itself was an abomination- moral issue. Northern industry didn"t depend on southern plantations that were fueled by slave labor. It was more favorable to pay people wages that worked in factories and such. After nat turner"s rebellion- many states banned the distribution of abolitionist material. The great compromise: slave trade was illegal, but buying and selling slaves on the open market in the united states was still legal. Any runaway slave that is found in the north, must be returned (or else they were legally liable).
