• Spending in healthcare industry is higher than many other industries
• 9/10,000 per person in the US
• US healthcare spending as a percent of GDP is much higher than many others
o Has been increasing since 1980
• Even though healthcare spending in US in higher, in most countries healthcare is
going up
o So increase in spending isn't just a US thing
• What is causing it to go up?
o Advances in technology
• Cost plus payment
o Specialization
o People are getting sicker, more long term chronic diseases
• We are healthier than we have been in the past
• Even if you took this away there will still be high health expenditures in
the US
o The importance of self preservation and health, so people are willing to pay
more for health
• Rising income: as people get richer, people willing to spend more on
healthcare
o Aging, growing elderly population
• Even if you took this away there will still be high health expenditures in
the US
o Inflation in the economy
o Insurance, share of healthcare spending that people are spending out of
pocket has gone down overtime
• Because of insurance people over consume medical care - "oh insurance
will cover it"
o QUANTITY of all these things are going up
• Total spending=(price)*(quantity)
• Two major factors causing expenditures to go up: technology and insurance
o As technology improves, there's more doctors can do for patients, more that
needs to be insured
o Growth of technology increased the demand for insurance
• Eventually this increase in spending will plateau - because we can't spend 100% of
GDP on healthcare
• Cost and benefit
o Ex: patients with severe forms heart disease, using complex treatments on
patients
