Neurons
The Nervous System
ANS: PNS -> Autonomic (controls self-regulated actions) -> sympathetic (arousing) or
parasympathetic (calming) + CNS (brain and spinal cord) -> somatic (controls voluntary
movements of skeletal muscles)
Glial cells: The glue->neurons are 10% of brain, glial cells are 90%
Astrocites -- babysit brain, clean up neurons and reg blood flow
Oligodendrocytes: insulators of CNS
Schwann cells: insulators of PNS
Microglia: brain’s immune system
Types of Neurons
Sensory: bring in incoming info
Interneurons: connect and process information
Motor
Myelin: insulating layer of fatty material, composed of glial cells
The Synapse
Junction between one neuron’s axon and another’s dendrites/cell body
Neurotransmitters cross the synapse
Plays a fundamental role in the communication between neurons
The Resting Potential
High concentration of K+ inside of neuron
Lower concentration of K+ outside neuron

Subcortical Structures
Where is the soul?
Pineal Gland: Seat of the soul
Descartes reasoning
- Only structure in the brain that isn’t split in half
The entrance to the 3rd eye
Actual function is melatonin secretion (daily rhythm)
Hypothalamus = homeostasis
Fight, Flight, Feeding, Sexual Activity
Neurons: -electro-chemical action potentials
-messages are fast-acting
-localized
-short-lived
Hormones: -slow moving
Travel through blood
Target broad areas
Have a longer effect
