They have trouble defining what will be best for themselves, only think of how others will perceive them. Carries into adulthood: unconditional: i"ll love you no matter what , but also separating a behavior from one"s inherent value/ worth. You can hate the sin but love the sinner: unconditional positive self-regard- if you get the unconditional love as a child, you will start to internalize the intrinsic worth and see yourself as valuable. Get them to believe that they are worthy and supported: empathetic understanding- demonstrate to client that the emotions they are experiencing are valuable. Client must feel like the clinician is understanding them. the clinician reflecting back to the client what he or she is saying. I hear you saying _____. is that correct? : client is never given an interpretation of their problem or any direction about what course of action to take to solve the problem. Therapist makes no attempts to change the client directly.
