THEME
A theme is what is expressed about the human condition. Or, in layman’s terms,
what the point of the story is. The theme of a particular story is almost always a debate.
Theme deals with the truths we cannot completely explain. Though we know about them
and understand them, we cannot always explain them.
There is normally a central theme in a work. Good authors can thicken it and put
different spins on it.
Do not confuse topic with theme.
Friendship is not a theme; it’s a topic. The theme would be what is expressed about
friendship. For example, who is still there after the dust settles in the story.
WORLDVIEW
How we see the world. If we right, this could show up in our writing. Good writers
have their own style. Personality is also part of this.
PERSONALITY
STYLE
Authors all have their own:
Diction
Or word choice.
It also depends on setting.
Syntax
Or sentence structure.
Conality (
Or tone.
Genre
Or category the book falls into.
Length of books and chapters
How short or long a book is.
How short or long the chapters in the book are.
Descriptive writing
This includes, but is not limited to, the author’s use of adjectives.
Symbolic meanings
This means that something in the book or piece of literature might represent
something that the author does not state.
