The Rhetorical Situation: professional women's soccer in America
Women’s soccer is one of the first sports where parents send their children too. Soccer is very
popular in the early ages all the way through high school. Although after that, soccer becomes
less important.
If we go back in the history women’s soccer in America came to existence in the early 20th
century, but it took till later in the century to get their first organized form of the game, the
Title IX (equal funding to men’s and women’s sports in colleges) and till 1995 to get the first
national women’s league (WPSL) and 2001 till the first professional women’s league saw the
light (NWSL).
So women’s soccer finally took off in the US, this resulted in three World Cup titles, Olympic
medals and the US dominates the world in the women’s game. Besides all the titles, women’s
soccer still gets less sponsors, less money and less opportunities than the men do. In 2015
World Cup play, the filing outlined that “women earned four times less than the men while
performing demonstrably better.” Last year, the women won their third World Cup, while the
men have not advanced past the quarterfinals in the modern era. The men’s highest FIFA
ranking is 4th back in 2004.
One of the players said, We are the best in the world, have three World Cup championships,
four Olympic championships.” The men get paid more to just show up than we get paid to
win major championships.” This also makes the American players go to Europe. European
football is growing a lot and if you would have the opportunity to live like a professional and
compete in the highest level, that’s an easy choice.
