GENERAL GOAL: To persuade
SPECIFIC GOAL: To persuade the audience to adopt a new belief or attitude.
THESIS SENTENCE: Meat consumption and health/veganism
INTRODUCTION
A. Do we all eat meat in this class?
B. Well, everybody who just said yes will kill at least 16000 animals in their life, so
on average, when 2017 is over you will have killed around 208 animals for food
consumption. This according to statistics of 2011 from www.upc-online.org,
which means that you can probably add a certain amount of animals to it, besides
that we’re ruining the planet and our health too.
C. Today I’m going to talk about the American food consumption, what the
production does to our footprint, the negative influence meat has on our body, the
options we have and what benefits it brings to cut meat.
I. only 3% of Americans say they follow a strict vegetarian or vegan diet
A. Which means that the rest of us, all 93% indulge meat and we love it. Americans are
known for being one of the most meat consumers in the world.
B. through the years the consuming of meat has been a topic that comes in the news and
although all the messages about meat consuming. The American consuming keeps
increasing. The average American now eats roughly 193 pounds of beef, pork and/or
chicken a year. This according to an article of marketwatch.com, published in 2016,
which got their information from the Pew Research Center. USDA data even shows
214.5 pounds per capita in 2016.
TRANSITION: These are only the amounts what we eat. The total meat production is even
more, because we also do meet export.
II. So what does meat production do to our environment.
A. If we would only look at beef alone, because beef is.
1. The popular red meat requires 28 times more land to produce than pork or
chicken, 11 times more water and results in five times more climate-
warming emissions.
2. When compared to staples like potatoes, wheat, and rice, the impact of beef
per calorie is even more extreme, requiring 160 times more land and
producing 11 times more greenhouse gases. These numbers come from a
study of 2014, published in the journal Proceedings of the National
Academy of Sciences.
3. To emphasize, but like I said that’s from just beef alone.
B. Also cutting down meat consumption to within accepted health guidelines would
make a large dent in greenhouse gases. A study on annual reviews from 2012 shows
that food system emissions could account for as much as quarter of all human emissions.
That is 12% from agricultural production, another 9% from farming induced
deforestation, and a further 3% from things like refrigeration and freight.
1. A vegetarian diet would bring down emissions by 63%, while a veganism diet
would even bring it down with 70% according to research, led by scientists at
the Oxford Martin School.
2. A Vegetarian’s food print (1,7 metric tons per capita) is about two thirds of the
average American (2.5) and almost half that of a meat lover (3.3). For a Vegan
it is even lower wit 1.5. Most interestingly, eating chicken instead of beef cuts

a quarter of emissions in one simple step.
3. To estimate each food prints the carbon intensity of food consumption in each
group is calculated. Which results into 22.4g CO2e/kcal for all the meats and
dairy, while it’s only 12.3g CO2e/kcal for everything else, drinks, oils, snacks,
bread, vegetables and fruit together. This information comes from
shrinkthatfoodprint.com
4. If we compare Livestock emissions to the transportation sector. Livestock
make up anywhere between 14.5 and 18 percent of total global greenhouse gas
emissions. The transportation sector is responsible for around 14 percent of
emissions. Which shows again that our current system of meat production is
extremely damaging, cause livestock farming is responsible for producing
methane, which is 23 times more potent when it comes to warming the planet,

TRANSITION: Besides the harm for the environment, what’s the harm for our body
III. All points should be indented the same.
A. A women health’s study indicates that higher consumption of total red meat,
especially various processed meats, may increase risk of developing type 2 diabetes
in women.
B. The World Health Organization has determined that dietary factors account for at
least 30 percent of all cancers in Western countries and up to 20 percent in
developing countries
C. Dr. Marco Springmann, lead author of the study, entitled Analysis and valuation of
the health and climate change co-benefits of dietary change says that more than 5m
premature deaths could be avoided globally by 2050 if health guidelines on meat
consumption were followed, rising to more than 7m with a vegetarian diet and 8m on
veganism. These steps, if widely followed, could also reduce global healthcare costs by
$1bn a year by mid-century.
TRANSITION: So now that we have all this information about the risks for our health and
the damage we do to our world. What are the options we have when we reduce or cut out
meat and the benefits.
IV. One option is to go all in and go vegan but if you want it less drastic you can option for
vegetarian, flexitarian (switching between vegetarian and meat eating) or just cut down the
amount of meat.
A. There are already a lot of meat and dairy replacers on the market, but if you really
can’t miss meat and tofu, tempeh or falafel isn’t something for you, they’re
making plant-based burgers that look and taste like the real deal. Impossible Foods
currently supplies its signature product a "bloody," plant-based burgers made from
wheat and potato protein, coconut oil, and a "secret sauce" molecule derived from
plants. The California-based startup Beyond Meat is also selling a burger made
mostly from pea protein, yeast extract, beet juice, and coconut oil that looks and
tastes similar to the real thing. The industry is also working on an in vitro meat.
B. Not eating meat has health benefits like lower cholesterol, which leads to a lower
risk for a heart disease, lower cancer risk, more efficient absorption of calcium and
bone metabolism, the process through which new bone tissue is formed. Lead to a
lower body mass index (BMI) and a reduced risk of obesity, protection against
diabetes 2, and it would cut down on the land required to produce meat with 99
percent and reduce the associated need for water by 90 percent. It would also
