PHIL 223 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Kantian Ethics, Virtue Ethics
Document Summary
Virtue ethics: definition: focuses on the development of character, the belief is that character is the key to the moral life. It is virtuous character that morally conducts and values what arises naturally. It differs from utilitarianism because utilitarianism focuses on good over bad, regardless of the urges of moral rules, it follows the consequences of the universal laws. Kantian ethics is completely regarding the moral law, despite what is morally correct, they abide by what is required by law. Virtue ethics is what is morally correct, what the right thing to do is, and not having a concern for the consequences: being virtuous: having self-willing and having reasoning. Develop virtuous characteristics by doing virtuous acts over and over again. We use our means and reasons to become virtuous.
