Goals for today:
• Go over midterm exam
• Go over toriawase assignment
• Song dynasty ceramics group work
Midterm:
• Everyone did well on the midterm
• Be sure to give detailed descriptions for painting, like the landscape paintings
• Be sure to understand historical contexts of much of the paintings and styles
• Add detail to responses next time
• Talk more about the natural entities of the tea ceremony and the tea room
• Refer to social contexts of gardens
• Made broad comparisons between various artistic forms as well as differing entities in
one kind of artistic forms, such as the differing forms of gardens and their comparisons
Toriawase projects:
• 5-6 page written essay
• presentation to the class
• look at assignment online
• must research through literature sources and museum websites
• picking certain ceramics and tea ceremony pieces that interest you to show how you
would set up a tea ceremony
• the paper will set the story for the tea ceremony you want to set up, why you wanted to
choose a certain ceramic piece, and speak of the historical context of the objects and their
purpose, show that you know the purpose of the tea ceremony and the objects in it
• you will make a slide show presentation showcasing the objects you chose and brief
description of each object
• essay is due last day of class (May 1st) but the presentation is due days earlier
Song dynasty Chinese ceramics group work:
• become very familiar with one specific type of song dynasty ware
• collectively produce a guide that will help students understand the main classifications of
song dynasty ceramics: their characteristic forms, decorations, and glazes; and for
historical context, their principal uses and patrons
• types of song dynasty wares:
o ding ware (ting)
o June Ware (Chune)
o Ru Ware (Ju)
o Guan Ware (Kuan)
o Quingbai ware (Ch’ing-pai)
o Yaozhou ware (yao-chou) and “Northern Celadon”
o Longquan ware (Lung-ch’uan)
o Jian ware (chien) and Jizhou ware (chichou) and “black glazed ware”
