TS 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Inkjet Printing, Screen Printing, Transfer Printing
Document Summary
Pigments are microscopic chips of color that may be held on the surface of a fiber by a resin-binding agents. Insoluble in water; must be forced into the cloth is the inside of the fibers is to be colored. Uses same dyes and pigments as textile dyeing but must be thickened into print paste. Applying color using a series of screens (~stencils) to apply color selectively and layer it successively. Each screen is rolled into cylinder form (vs. flat) to reduce floor space required. Print paste is squeeze out from the interior. Only economical for large quantities because cost and time to engrave rollers. Heat and pressure cause transfer of dyes to substrate. Can be used for fabric or garment parts. Exceptional flexibility to change patterns, colors easily and quickly. Environmentally friendly-- no water or chemical dye to waste. Pattern is printed onto substrate using wax-like substance that prevents dye penetration.
