Grounding = information based on an individual"s cultural field (previous experience, education, values, attitudes leading to how communication is influenced. The meaning of a message is grounded in the personal field of the sender & receiver. Explicit, direct, unambiguous is used in low context cultures (mostly spoken word) Inexact, ambiguous, and implicit is used in high context cultures where the receiver fills in the meaning. 6. 2 (p. 112) independent self-concepts (individualism) imply low context; direct communication by individualist cultures. Interdependent self-concepts (collectivist) imply high context; indirect communication by collectivist cultures; the truth is not absolute. Use of silence by collectivist cultures allows them to control the communication (extreme high context). Arab-language cultures engage in exaggeration, assertion, and repetition to make their point. Use of praise: us culture uses praise of physical appearance to people close to you. Japanese praise strangers; arabs & japanese praise skill & work. Chinese deflect praise; australians (anglos) politely accept praise.
