Document Summary

The first communication challenge that comes along with virtual teams in different geographical locations is the lag that occurs between messages being sent. When communicating face-to-face, verbal communication can be almost instant. However, when communicating with technology, there is a bit of a lag, for example, it takes about 2 minutes for an email to arrive. Another factor that may play into this is the time change between different parts of the world. An email sent at 2pm in new york will be received around 8pm in germany, when the team members have already left their workplace. This hinderance of sharing of information has a few consequences. Because of this, these teams take a bit longer to form, and might even take a bit longer to complete a task than a team of people that meet face-to- face regularly.
