Competency-based education is a data-based, adaptive, performance oriented, set of processes that facilitate, measure, record, and certify within the context of flexible time parameters, the demonstration of known, explicitly stated, and agreed upon learning outcomes that reflect successful functioning. This type of instruction is designed to teach and/or improve the tasks, skills, attitudes that are critical to success in life and/or earning a living. and the most relevant to the school-to-work transition. In this type of instruction the students are evaluated on how they perform against the objective. In norm referencing the students are compared against each other. Competencies: defined roles, clearly defined expectations of the student, competencies given to the student prior to instruction, based upon specified competencies, explicitly stated expected levels of mastery under specified. Criteria conditions: competencies given to the student prior to instruction. Assessment: performance orientation, observable and measurable behavior, specific indicators that attest to the student"s ability to evaluate the outcomes of their performance.
