Module 15, part 2: the future of health care. The successes of the u. s. health care system contrasts with failures to recognize the broader policy mission of ensuring access to all citizen. The basic health care needs of 16 percent of the population are unmet, we cannot seem to control costs, and medical error rates are at an unacceptable level. We often rely on costly services that have no proven benefit and there are variations in treatments across different regions of the country. Addressing any one element of costs, quality or access results in changes in another. However, the growing numbers of uninsured americans along with demands for greater clinical and fiscal accountability will lead to change. The aca is symbolic of discontent with the system. Predictions about the health care system are highly risky as the system moves into uncharted territory. Trend extrapolation is most reliable under stable conditions.
